Drawing is a vital artistic skill, but many people, even those who will boldly try their hands at painting, shy away from it, seeing it as a skill beyond their capabilities. But anyone can learn to draw provided they are given the right helping hand, and this is exactly what Collins Complete Drawing Course provides. The author, Ian Simpson, shows that drawing is about learning to see in a certain way rather than mastering a set of techniques. Once you can see and observe clearly you will begin to enjoy drawing and find that it really isn't so difficult. The book is a structured teaching course and reference manual for artists at all levels of ability. A series of carefully planned lessons and easy-to-follow projects takes you from basic drawing exercises to more ambitious ones in which you are encouraged to explore your own creative potential. If you have suffered from old-fashioned teaching methods, or are among those who believe that you simply don't have the ability, this book will change your thinking. The course is divided into four main sections: Foundation Course, Themes and Treatments, Different Approaches, and Media and Methods. The first section helps you to acquire basic drawing skills, using both monochrome and colour media, while the second introduces more ambitious subjects and approaches. In both these sections, a series of lessons teaches you how to analyse your subject and get the best out of your drawing tools. The emphasis in the lessons is on learning by doing, and each one includes. at least two practical projects to give you essential practice. A 'self-critique' box at the end of each lesson helps you to pinpoint any faults in your own work. The third section, Different Approaches, contains eight lessons featuring and explaining the work of master artists, both past and present. Here again, there are projects to give you hands-on experience, and the lessons are interspersed with special features giving important basic information on such topics as perspective and composition. The fourth section, Media and Methods, will help you to develop your own style and way of working. Gone are the days when drawing meant carefully shading in an outline with pencil. In this section, as well as learning the traditional techniques associated with the various drawing media, you will discover how to draw freely with ink and brushes and boldly with charcoal and pastels. In addition you will be introduced to some fascinating and enjoyable mixed-media techniques, such as collage and wax resist. Throughout the book, further inspiration is provided by a selection of finished drawings by well-known artists working in a variety of styles and media. Together, the combination of practical information, projects and examples of work makes Collins Complete Drawing Course an invaluable reference book for all artists.
